Divvent

Use your own domain

Give your application an address on your own domain, like app.yourcompany.com, and send its email from your domain too.

Your application can answer on an address of your own, such as app.yourcompany.com, instead of a Divvent address. You prove the domain is yours, point it at your application, and the certificate that makes it secure is issued for you. You can also have your application's email come from your own domain.

Everything here is on your application's Settings, on the Domains tab. Anyone on the account can see it; only an owner can add or remove a domain.

Before you start

Add a domain

  1. Under Add a domain, type the address, such as app.yourcompany.com, with no https:// in front and nothing after it.
  2. Press Add.

The domain appears with the status waiting for your record, and a table of DNS records to add at your domain provider. Each row gives a Type, a Name, a Value and What it is for. Copy the name and value exactly.

Add the records at your domain provider

There are usually two records. Your domain provider's settings will have a page for DNS records where you can add them.

TypeWhat it does
TXTProves you own the domain. Keep it there for good: it is checked again regularly, and the domain is detached if it goes.
CNAMESends visitors to your application. The certificate is issued once this is in place.

You add the TXT record first. The CNAME record appears on the page once Divvent has seen the TXT record and attached the domain to your application.

Check and go live

After adding the TXT record, press Check followed by the domain's name. Changes to DNS can take a while to be seen. If the record is not found yet, the page says so; wait a few minutes and check again. You can check once a minute.

The status moves through these steps:

  1. waiting for your record: add the TXT record, then check.
  2. verified or attaching: the domain is proven yours and is being attached to your application. This usually takes a few minutes. For your company's first domain it can take up to an hour.
  3. waiting for the CNAME: add the CNAME record shown on the page. Once it is in place, the certificate is issued.
  4. live: your application answers on your address, with its own certificate.

If the TXT record is never seen within fourteen days, the domain shows expired. Add it again to get a new record.

If a record goes missing

Divvent keeps checking the TXT record. If it disappears from a live domain, the page shows a warning with the date it went, and the account's owners are emailed. Put it back: if it is missing for three days, the domain is detached and shows lapsed, and you would need to add it again.

If the domain is already in use

If the page says the address is already in use on Divvent, it can't be added to your application.

Remove a domain

Press Remove followed by the domain's name. The status shows removing while it is detached from your application, then removed. Once it says removed, you can delete its records at your domain provider.

Send email from your own domain

The mail your application sends, such as sign-in links, invitations and notifications, can come from your own domain instead of Divvent's. The Email from your domain section shows the address mail currently comes from.

  1. Under Send from your domain, type the Name before the @, such as bookings, and the Domain, such as yourcompany.com. Here the bare domain is fine. Press Add.
  2. Add the TXT record shown to prove the domain is yours, then press Check followed by the domain's name.
  3. The status becomes waiting for SPF and DKIM. Add the SPF and DKIM records shown, and the DMARC record if one is shown, then check again.
  4. When the status says sending, your application sends from your address from its next release (see Release a version).

If your domain already has a DMARC record, keep yours. The page tells you it found one and does not suggest another, because two DMARC records make receiving mail servers ignore both. The DMARC record the page suggests only asks for reports; making it stricter is your choice.

If the mail records go missing, the page warns you. Three days after they went, your application's mail comes from Divvent's address instead until you put them back.

To stop, press Stop sending from followed by the domain's name. Your application goes back to sending from Divvent's address from its next release.

One application can send from one domain of its own.

If the section says Sending from your own domain is not switched on here yet, you can still add your domain and prove it is yours. The rest follows once it is switched on.
